The Liberal government is trying to muzzle people suffering from rare diseases by defeating a push for public hearings into improving their medical treatment, says a Progressive Conservative MPP.

“That’s a letdown,” Michael Harris (Kitchener-Conestoga) said Thursday as Liberals outvoted Tories and New Democrats supporting his motion to establish a non-partisan, all-party committee to recommend solutions.

An attempt to get an all-party committee to develop a rare disease strategy in Ontario failed Thursday as the governing Liberals disagreed with the Opposition on how best to help people with so-called orphan diseases.

The majority Liberals voted against the Progressive Conservative motion to strike a committee to hear from rare disease sufferers and make recommendations on how to help them get diagnosis and treatment.

On the rarest day of the calendar, Ontario is taking action on a rare disease. Health Minister Eric Hoskins on Monday announced a new clinic for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS).

Progressive Conservative MPP Michael Harris (Kitchener-Conestoga), who long advocated for the families with rare diseases, is introducing legislation for the last day of February to be recognized as Rare Disease Day.
